Jake Gyllenhaal, star of Jarhead is hot! This is the best performance of his career. The range of his emotions and his incredibly natural interactions with his fellow Marines is something to behold. With his head shaved, his ocean blue eyes become the window to his soul. The movie develops the character of the lead actors from the opening scenes. But the focus is all on Jake's character Swofford. Jamie Fox's performance as the drill sergent is outstanding, but Jake is the centerpiece of this film. If you are not into seeing another war picture, then don't fear Jarhead as those few scenes are minimal and unremarkable. Many will thoroughly enjoy Jake being dominated by his drill sargent from the moment he reports to his unit, calling him out for "special attention" and humiliation whenever possible. The drill sergeant’s demeanor is revealing and homoerotic to the max. Watching the most sensitive, beautiful, talented actor who is the newest gay icon in Hollywood, make the transition from civilian to Marine is rivoting. The theme effectively plays into every gay man's fantasy of life in the Marine Corps in every way possible while being able to play to a mainstream audience. In fact, the glue that binds this film together for the viewer is the voiceovers by Jake as the movie transitions. As Swofford (Jake) graduates boot camp, he matter of factly lists what he has learned, the recurring theme is masturbation, in many places and forms, and that his mouth is now a "cum recepticle". Getting in touch with Jake as Swofford at an emotional level, makes this film worth the price of admission for Gyllenhall fans. Watch for Jake to appear on the silver screen again December 9th in Brokeback Mountain, the story of two gay cowboys working on a Montana dude ranch.
